Appearance vs. Reality: Characters

Iago:

Appearance: Iago is a man that appears to have great honor and loyalty. He is a great friend of Othello and Desdemona and seems to treat them very nicely. They feel like Iago will always be a true friend and a loyal person towards them and continue to be an honest person.

Reality: In reality, Iago is one of the most dishonest and deceiving people in the entire story. He lies to the faces of almost every character in the play, including those that are supposed to be his friends. He is extremely manipulative towards Othello and other characters. Iago is extremely jealous of the fact that the Moor received the General position, and made Cassio his first officer. It is for that reason that he has created an evil plan to ruin Othello's life.

Othello:

Appearance: Othello has the appearance of a big, strong, powerful man. He was appointed the general of the Venetian army. Everyone looks up to him as a mentor and a leader. He is perceived as an honest and trustworthy man.

Reality: In reality, Othello is exactly how people see him. He does not lie, he is completely in love and loyal to his wife Desdemona. He is also loyal to his friends and colleagues, always tells the truth and is completely trustworthy.

Desdemona:

Appearance: Desdemona has married Othello the Moor. Despite her good reputation for being honest and true, she has been harshly judged for marrying him. Desdemona has also been accused of cheating on Othello because Iago has been whispering in his ear, feeding him lies about her and his first officer causing him to doubt her loyalty.

Reality: Also in Reality, Desdemona has no flaws. She is also an extremely loyal person and always makes the right choices regarding the trust and loyalty of others towards herself. She is the truest and most honest woman and she is completely loyal to Othello right until the bitter end. Despite Desdemona's father's protests, they are the perfect couple, they are very much in love and have the perfect marriage.
